Since MechWarrior: Online came to Steam I figured I'd give it another go, since you aren't able to write reviews for games without having playtime on Steam (makes sense).
It's....okay. It definitely feels better than it did before, but the designs still bug the crap out of me and for a game that was released in 2013, the animations are just sad. It's nowhere near the quality of animations found in MechWarrior 3, or heck, even 4 in some cases. The leg movements don't line up with the movement speed of the mech, and the cockpit jostling is just wrong in every way. I mean I get that MechWarrior 4 wasn't exactly the best when it came to presentation, but at least the cockpit animations where more of a smooth swaying, so it didn't make the player sick to their stomach. In MW:O it's all jerky and weird, and really doesn't make much sense...But I'm getting off topic.
The balance is still pretty bad, with snipers and laser boats ruling the battlefield, and the lack of Radar mixed with overpowered ECM making LRMs a pain in the ass to use most of the time. Not to mention Ghost Heat.
The community seems a bit less hostile towards solo players than it used to be, which is good. And teamwork seems to be encouraged more through in-game rewards, which while nice, gives it this weird e-sports feel that really breaks immersion (what little there was, anyways).
I guess the long and short of it is this: It's a bit better than before, but it's still crap. The designs are very hit and miss, the animations are lazy, the UI is absolutely terrible, everything is overpriced causing a horrible amount of grinding, and the game modes are just three variations of the same basic thing.
That being said, apparently I can build a mean Centurion in it.
