Recently i went on Moddb Mechwarrior 4 mercenaries to say i had tools to modify mechwarrior 4 to one of the guys trying to keep mechwarrior 4 up and noticed he had said this "Next Year 2015 MechWarrior 3 will be Open Source, Free." www.moddb.com/members/cytcmegi've scoured all around the net to find out clues from multiple sources and haven't found anything but that so i just wanted to know if anyone else knows about this (because if it is true that means that we could add so many things and fix issues also)

Back when Mektek was getting ready to offer up the "free MechWarrior 4" promo I had asked Finnegan McCool, who was on staff at Mektek, if he would find out if Mech3 source could be included in that offering from Microsoft, but Vam never got back to him with an answer I guess.

So many secrets lie within Mektek the lead developers house burned down and as soon as that happened AT1/Solaris MW4 ceased production as for mech3 mektek abandoned it because it was too troublesome if we are lucky we will receive the Source code for Mech 3 and Mech 4 (over time) as for possible mechwarrior 3 mechs we could use models from the now dead battletech simulator on virtual commander and search around the net for models

Yes, Mech3 is glitchy. With my modding of it has come odd texture glitches, red or blue colored stripes will show up in the landscape, sometimes red or blue dots. What multiplayers used to call "LRM boot" happens more often with the edits I've done. My theory is that the engine gets overloaded with information it has to process. But, it doesn't happen all the time, and for what it is and what I've been able to add to the game it's worth it for people who truly love Mech3.

I remember seeing those lines when playing the game.

By the way I finally spoke to the gentleman who wrote that notice about open source this year and it really wasn't anything with validity. He had heard someone say that this year MechWarrior 3 becomes officially freeware, and I guess he made the assumption that it meant open source, which it does not. Personally, I have not verified the freeware claim. I have however been pursuing other avenues in my hunt for the source. If anything concrete happens I'll let everyone know..I'm sure everyone here knows that

We could try to reverse engineer the game but microprose has the source code but they closed down awhile back, harebrained schemes is bringing back a old title that involves crimson skies or battletech (possibly mechcommander because JW wants it)

Reverse engineering is always tricky though. A few years ago, I stumbled across a German's attempt at reverse engineering one of my all-time favorite mech games, Earthsiege 2. You can check out his work at this site: sites.google.com/site/es2reveng/homeHe made some good progress considering the age of the engine; however he was never able to get close to what we'd want for any old mech game - i.e. new maps, new mechs, maybe new graphics. The amount of time he invested didn't exactly get him a whole lot. As much as we all love MW3, if M$ is not ever going to be forth-coming with the source code (which is highly unlikely they will) people should look to building new mech games. Maybe at some point there could be a mech game that was open source from the start.

Skyfaller of Mech2.org managed to literally make a program to modify mech 2 but he is currently busy with life others managed to mod mech 4 also so i am sure we could reverse engineer all the mech games we just need the best programmars to do so

I'm not sure how good it's going to be, he claims that he is making a game that is going to be "developed by you guys" meaning us average fans...basically whoever volunteers to help him. However, I'm not sure how open minded he really is after some conversations I've had with him. He needs a modelers and texturers, and whoever wants to contribute. www.indiedb.com/company/battletech-fan-game-developers/forum

Is this mod still alive? Last activity is from april 21st.
