If you enter the Lance command mode, (the one with the green screen), you can leave the mission area without failing the mission. The instant you go out of Lance mode though, if you are still out of bounds, you fail. I remember discovering this when I was around 9 years old, and leaving the computer up with a weight on the forward key. Then the next day see how far I got.
1. Is this a bug? 2. Why is the out of bounds area so big? 3. You can find other structures out of bounds, and out of sight of the mission area. Why do these exist? 4. I just now got MW3 working, so I will rediscover them, but there were some really strange areas on some Instant Action maps.

Mw3 is built on one big map, each mission area is cordoned off by boundaries. So, if there were no boundaries you could conceivably visit every mission/map it would just take a long time.

We found a bug online where you could hold the Escape Key and your mech would appear to be running in place like Peri's avatar. But while you hold Escape, your mech would still be moving around on your screen. When the person let go of Escape, their mech would appear to his opponents to teleport to real his current location.

ROFL, that is the worst design decision I have ever heard of. I thought of that as one explanation, but thought it was too outlandish to be true.

I have not ventured out of bounds very far, but my guess is that not everything is fully rendered out of bounds in the next mission area. I don't think this is in fact unique to mechwarrior 3 though... in far cry I have also had a similar glitch (albeit after removing a mod). Where the mission is supposed to end but does not. The next mission area has all the landscape components but very little texturing and lacks all but the most substantial objects. My guess is that doing this decreases the loading time between missions; these areas cannot be fully rendered to avoid overloading both the engine as well the machine (current technology) running the game (you know, kind of how many games have reduced draw distance?)

Mech3 has 6 separate worlds: training area, c1,c2,c3,c4,and c4b. These worlds are large enough to have from 3 to 6 mission areas...that's when the boundaries come in. The mission areas have their own unique landscape and other structural characteristics. Beyond the mission areas the worlds for the most part simply regenerate onward repeating basic 3d landscape elements.

yeah mw3 renders the worlds completely once the player drops in.... i remember spending HOURS just running around in a souped up shadowcat with a single laser finding people to squish at the various little "towns" and the esc key glitch was annoying when you seen it online ~_~
