Something I always wanted to see with IS customization was a system where your customization options depend heavily upon your location.
I would let them switch out weapons whenever they wanted so long as they fit with the type of hardpoint (MW4 style), but perhaps have it so that there's a chance of it not working quite right. Maybe this alteration of the mech results in less heat efficiency or reduced accuracy and damage.
Then, there would be friendly systems which bases and mechbays capable of legitimate customization. It would be more expensive, but this way you could switch out weapons and systems without the risk of reduced effectiveness.
And lastly, if you brought your mech to a world with a factory producing said model of Mech, THEN you would be able to spend large amounts of C-bills to dramatically alter the mech, even switching what kinds of hardpoints the mech has. Obviously there would be some restrictions to this system, but I think it would be interesting.
I think this way of handling IS customization would make it feel a lot more dramatic when you lose a weapon or a limb on a mech. Replacing it might be possible, or even easy, near the "front lines", but it will still not restore your mech to peak performance. It would make salvaging and such a lot more interesting as well. Players would take more time thinking about the pros and cons of slapping whatever sniper weapons or autocannons they can find onto all their mechs.
Granted, this would require a game with a well made, persistent, "open-world" style. (Which honestly is what Battletech really deserves.)

Don't believe the newbies in MWO should be shoved in with the full-time frat boys. Makes for longer, harder career paths, short matches and hard feelings. A lot of players are abandoning the game simply because they're demoralized and they don't have the scratch to literally buy their advantages like the frat boys did ("Magic The Gathering," anyone?).
"Enjoy the graphics for the five seconds before you eject!" Makes a great argument for ladder-league competition (something I miss most about the MW3/4 days), and I don't recall seeing anything like that last I looked at MWO. Working your way up the ranks of your unit, earning tonnage along with command duties was one of the things that made it most fun, I thought. Even the scout mech freshmen had roles to fulfill until they were promoted.
But as you say, "they just wanted to sell 'Mechs and cockpit ornaments."
We get enough ya-hoos around this shebeen, I'd like to see a ladder league (and give those Draconis Combine stiffs some p a y b a c k - oh, yes, I CAN hold a grudge for fifteen years!).

THX for the warmth! Not booting to Windows ATM, but soon as I get my mitts on a license, you guys will be the first to know... BTW, I did a cursory search of "Mechwarrior Online" and "ladder league" and whatd'y'know?: www.nogutsnogalaxy.net/forum/index.php?topic=2179.0Completely missed that last time I was there. But MWO has some sorry joystick support. Neither Saitek nor Logitech sticks would work well enough to play, even with key mapping, as recently as last fall. What pilot ever drove his 'mech with a mouse?!? This aint no first-person shooter! Besides, another reason I liked MW3 so well was that these machines are big and s l o w, which means you had to react to what's happening two seconds in the future - or be fragged. Drive an Annihilator in both MW3 and -4, and you'll see what I mean (this would be Microsoft "listening to the gaming community," where every Mack truck driver wants his rig to handle like a Corvette).

After my internet settled down Sunday, I tried MWO again after asking people what the current state of the game was. Here are a few positive things I saw.
What I noticed vs the Beta/Launch.
1) Hit detection is amazing 2) no more mechs colliding and falling down(so far) 3) ECM doesn't seem to be king anymore 4) the frame rate and gameplay is extremely smooth 5) omfg that Mechlab is what the game needed from the start. A+ 6) the game matching is way better than it used to be. no more 7 vs 12 matches.

Mech 3 Multiplayer has its quirks and I don't mind them although they can get annoying sometimes, but I'm happy just playing single-player...and getting my Death blooms and my AC10 and wacking the smoke jags over and over and over...those basterds deserve it.

MechWarrior 3 really has the toughness aspect of the mechplay down. You need coolant, your mech can get knocked down, and weapons just hit harder. UAC 20's or LRMs will keep you on the ground. In MWO, it seems they took away coolant and the ability to knock mechs down. Falling down is one of the worst things to happen to you in a Mech game. It's the biggest fear I think alot of MW3/4 players have.
