IP games should work just fine, but if you can't get it to work you might try GameRanger, they support MechWarrior 3.
In order for him to find you, you both need to choose the same settings. If you are the host, then click connect on tcp/ip game, then click "host".
He should then simply be able to click "search for game" without inputting your IP address.
Another consideration is that windows 7, and I imagine any version after xp, will block you both. So, alt-tab out of the setup dialogue and see if the
firewall notification dialogue has come up from windows, and click "allow". You both might have to do this.
For whatever the reason his computer is simply not able to see yours. If none of the above is helpful try to think along those lines.

I never got very technical with my 'Mech3 multiplayer because it was never an issue for me back in the day, but I do know that the correct ports are listed in the 'MechWarrior 3 Read-Me file. However I am guessing that you or your friend are just missing something simple, because you should show up in his search, especially if you give him your IP address. Make sure you're giving him the right IP address. To be sure you are giving him the right one just go to "programs"/"microprose"/"get ip address"....the game has its own utility for it and will show you the right one.

When I try and register, it doesn't recognize MW3 as a valid game. What game title did you put in?

hmm, I have not updated recently, try using any game it recognizes, the lobbies will work regardless,I believe. If not ask fukindumbastard, he is the site owner.

You have to configure your own lobbies for 'MechWarrior 3 I believe.
